Long before popularity was measured in shares and likes, DJ Cozmic Cat was spreading her sounds at clubs and parties in Toronto and across the globe. Sharing is exactly what music was made for, and that’s what has made taste making DJ’s like Coz the original zeitgeists of the modern era. Coz, better known to her friends as Paula Burrows, spent a defining ten years honing her skills in Philadelphia where the citie's soul, funk, house, and hip-hop roots naturally influenced her style and musical identity. As her skills transported her around the world, melting hearts in Iceland and giving NYC more sleepless nights, her inspiration broadened and she began her transformation into the masterfully eclectic DJ she is today. But playing music is only one side of the story, and eventually Coz felt the natural push to contribute to the scene she was purveying. As part of Jupiter Productions she’s now a DJ whose music other DJ’s play. Coz's tracks appear on iTunes, Beatport, Juno and other global digital music outlets signed by and remixing for various dance music labels worldwide. Her bubbling house remix of Amber Long’s Creepy on the “ House of House” compilation (Sa Trincha Label) has woken up the sun in Ibiza while her productions on the full length hip-hop album REVOLUTIONS (on her own Jupiter Productions label) provided a platform for politically conscious Canadian/Egyptian rapper Nari to be heard back in Toronto, the city Coz now calls home. DJ’ing is about finding the connections between music, and it’s these unseen stories that appear in Coz’s remixes as she uses her skills to reveal the euphoric moments waiting below the surface of an original song. It’s this ear for a sound and vibe that can immediately be felt through Coz’s series of weekend ready edits of artists like The Temptations, Jully Black, Jackson 5 and Missy Elliot Coz’s productions are rooted in the bump and grind of house but they continue to morph and challenge traditional dance music with a forward thinking approach. Her sounds are always moving forward while consciously looking back on the sounds of yesterday and winking. After calling the DJ booth home for fifteen years, Coz has played alongside a slew of music royalty and countless venues but this never changed the humble and giving character that Coz is. In fact, it’s only made her more sharing of her experiences and when she’s not spinning or in the studio she can be found mentoring at Supporting Our Youth and facilitating workshops for DJ’ing and producing with the Toronto District School Board. With a weekly residency at Toronto’s Drake One Fifty, a monthly at The Round, and never far from appearing at high profile events and festivals, this is one cat whose party is never over.
