"What the hell is that?" gives you almost all the information you need to know about Coben’s take on bass music. Often working outside the constraints of one genre, the Edinburgh based producer brings a sound that is unmistakably unique, fusing intricate bass work with funk, jazz, drum and bass and beyond. Born and raised in Edinburgh, Coben (Benjamin Counsell) has been a musician from a young age. Jazz trained, Coben dove in to dubstep at nine years old, and picked up music production when he was 15. Coben draws on inspiration from all over the musical spectrum: citing influences from Fox Stevenson, San Holo, Koan Sound, and Mr. Bill (with whose label Coben has released his debut EP, and featured on a VA album with). Being part of the Scottish music scene, as a musician and as an artist liason/event manager, Coben has played in some of Edinburghs most well known venues and clubs, such as Cabaret Voltaire, The Mash House, Midnight Bass, Sneaky Petes, and more, as well as having his original music played internationally, and at shows and festivals across the UK, Spain, The Netherlands, Croatia, and beyond. There’s a wave of new music on the horizon, and you can expect Coben to be spearheading it.
