Chipzel
Biografía
Chipzel has become best associated as a pioneer of the Chiptune scene - a style of electronic music created on retro consoles and computers. Chipzel is renowned for her use of a Nintendo Gameboy in both composition and performance. Her live performances take original 8bit sound and manipulate it into something frantically hard-hitting with retro-gaming appeal. Niamh has worked on numerous soundtracks of games including Interstellaria (a real time space-exploration sim and crew management game) and Dicey Dungeons (a deck-building game developed by Irish game designer Terry Cavanagh also available on Nintendo Switch). Her music is also featured in other games such as Just Shapes and Beats and Spectra.
Niamh recently appeared on BBC World Service on their show ‘Music Life’, which featured four composers including Chipzel (Niamh Houston), Oliver Deriviere, Lena Rain and Josris de Man answer listeners’ questions about making music for video games.
Previously, Niamh teamed up with Terry Cavanagh, a video games developer from Monaghan, they worked together on the BAFTA-nominated mobile game Super Hexagon which led to an established career in games scoring.
For her latest release, Niamh and Terry teamed up once again to create their second in the series of Dicey Dungeons, a charming and wholesome video game set on a TV Game Show with a luck-of-the-draw, casino-type gameplay inspired by Pokemon and Dungeons & Dragons. Dicey Dungeons has become a top favourite amongst players and listeners of Chipzel’s work and will be in for a surprise this coming month as the team set to announce a new instalment to the game.
