Charles musical taste came from his father Charles Jr who played all types of music from Rock to Soul. Charles became interested in DJing from listening to radio mix shows on New York's stations. Mesmerized by Shep Pettibone's Edits and Mastermixes charles would practice DJing and learning cassette tape edits with his cousin John Hughes. Joining the military in the early 80s Charles had the opportunity to DJ in nightclubs around the country like Perth Australia, Seoul Korea, and Subic Bay Philippines. In the US the clubs were in Seattle WA, San Diego CA, cities in New Jersey and New York working for entertainment companies. After going to studio sessions with friend Keisha Jenkins, Kenny Bobien and producers Guy Vaughn and Shedrick Guy Charles became insterested in music production. In 2000 Charles met John Crockett and they formed the production team Working Underneath and had releases out on labels, Phuture Sole, Space Kat, Siesta Music, UNDO and United Music. Working Underneath then created their own label Haus Flor Recordings. Meeting singer Chris McCray thru John Crockett, Charles and Chris became very close friends and would often visit super producer Kerri Chandler at his studio. That studio experience with Chris McCray and Kerri Chandler help shape the foundation of Charles production style and studio work ethic. After several years Charles relocated to North Carolina and started his label Raw Substance Music. With this label Raw Substance charles goal was to created music ranging with styles of Afrolatin, Deep, and Funky Tech Grooves.
