Employing cheap old keyboards, guitar pedals and literal toys Dailen Williams creates work characterized by its heavy use of buzzy basslines, soft shimmery drones, melodic drums, and the worn, tired voice that holds it all together. Caloric makes music about frustration and change; songs for all of us who are still trying to heal. Somber and pulsating describe the nature of the punctuated grooves and catchy lyrics that act as the vessels for the words she lacked the strength to say when she was younger. Though the messages of the tracks are more bleak than what one might expect for the dance floor their sound is energetic, inviting, and hypnotic - preferring fan organs and strained whispers to the standard fare of super saws and Melodyne. A self-taught producer, Dailen began DJing and beatmaking in 2011, eventually going on to start various underground party-series around Providence with her peers, including the recurring experimental club night "Approximate ≈" (2016), the inflatable art installation series "Ice Floe" (2016-2018), and the monthly queer dance party "Hot Club II" (2019-2020). Currently she is a co-organizer and resident DJ for "Que Dulce", a sober dance party series for queer people. She is also at this very moment (!!) in the process of creating a collectively-owned music label with others for queer electronic musicians in Rhode Island and the surrounding areas.
