August (NL)

August (he/him) is a Dutch DJ and founder of collective, event series and booking agency Abyss. With techno as a building block, he creates slow-burning journeys through ambient, half-time drum and bass, subtle percussion and deep trippers. Just like the ocean he takes inspiration from, his sets move between calmness and intensity, darkness and light, searching for hope within the shadowy corners. Spending his formative years in the basement of De School, August credits the countless hours on it’s dancefloor as the catalyst for his own artist identity. It was there that he became truly captivated by the power of storytelling and the darker dimensions of sound, witnessing how patient progression could transform techno into an art form. Inspired from a young age by the profound ways film soundtracks can move people, August developed a fascination with music's ability to evoke emotion. This curiosity sparked an early pursuit of exploration, contributing to a wide and layered collection of tracks. Through careful digging, each selection is guided by an instinct for how the sound may transform a particular club space or outdoor environment. Cinematic in nature and laced with melancholia, his sound invites listeners to venture further into the mind, where atmosphere and unfolding narratives take precedence over immediacy. His musical world is underpinned by an unwavering sense of depth and introspection. Community and knowledge sharing sit at the heart of August's practice. Viewing the industry as an important ecosystem built on collective contribution, these values became the motivation behind founding Abyss. Drawing from the idea of an “expansive chasm of deep, immeasurable space or void”, Abyss is built around collaboration, network sharing and collective growth, creating space for artists to support one another and develop with intention.
