Like the city he calls home, New York’s own Ody Roc –also known as “Audio KoDe”- never seems to slow down. Behind the decks his energy level is infectious, allowing him to connect with audiences in a way other DJs only dream of. Whether dropping the latest house bombs in the world’s top dance clubs, headlining exclusive industry parties, or unleashing insane turntablist tricks at sold-out stadium tours, Ody’s passion for music and making people dance has been part of his life for as long as he can remember. “In the early 1980s my older brother would go to Manhattan clubs like the Fun House and Paradise Garage, and bring back cassette tapes”, Ody recalls of his introduction to the sounds of hip-hop, break beats, and classic house. “I listened to the tunes being dropped and was blown away!” After bluffing his way past Fun House security -with the aid of his brother’s passport- the 12 year old Ody experienced first-hand the interaction between the DJ and a packed house of clubbers. This night lit a spark that still burns in him today. With the same drive and intensity that would go on to follow him throughout his career, Ody scraped together a cheap mixer and mismatched pair of turntables and set to work learning the tricks and techniques he’d see heavyweight DJs drop at local parties. “DJs, like Prince Quick Mix- he was a BEAST!” Ody laughs. “He’d use crazy effects, cuts and edits. Stuff no-one else was doing. I emulated what he was doing, but added my own flavor.” Before long, word started getting out that this kid Ody Roc from Queens was someone to watch out for, and it wasn’t long before one of his mixtapes wound up in the hands of hip-hop heavyweights, landing him a spot at NYC’s legendary El Flamingo, and the rest as they say, was history. The Nineties saw Ody coming into his own, honing his turntable skills while on tour with mega DJs, and representing his motherland Greece as the national champion and finalist in the 1998 DMC World DJ Championships. While in Greece, in 1998, Ody travelled to the infamous island of Mykonos and played for the first time at the legendary club Cavo Paradiso. “It was my first experience playing with big international house DJs” he remembers. “The energy they created was SICK!” When Wamdue’s Deep C dropped Aril Brikha’s “Art of Vengeance”, “the place went absolutely NUTS!” he recalls. “That record opened up my eyes.” Back in NYC, Ody was hand-picked by Diddy to open the 2000 “Bad Boy Tour” and he delivered, dazzling concert audiences across 3 continents for over a year. Following the tour, Ody reigned as NYC’s “club king” and headlined events nationwide. Even with his success, Ody was not content to rest and eagerly got to work, creating sets of house mash-ups and tribalinfused techno. Ody’s one of a kind sets, coupled with his uncanny ability to create live edits on multiple decks, quickly won over the discerning European clubbers. His performances at Mykonos’ Cavo Paradiso, alongside such luminaries as Steve Lawler, Steve Angello of Swedish House Mafia and Chus & Ceballos, impressed. With an established residency at Cavo Paradiso, Ody spends two months each and every summer alongside the likes of Carl Cox, Dubfire and Danny Tenaglia, and plays a large part in the club’s post at the top of DJ Magazine’s “Top 100 Clubs” list. The last couple of years have been Ody’s busiest both in and out of the club. Ody commands the dance floor, whether dropping house bombs for 7000+ at Switzerland’s “Zurich 2010 Festival” or getting shout-outs from Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler at Studio 54 Las Vegas. In the studio, Ody found his voice as a producer with his debut “The Future”, featuring remixes from Cevin Fisher and Honey Dijon, slated for a 2011 release on NYC’s Kinetika Records. Always keeping it fresh, 2011 introduces Ody’s alter-ego known as Audio KoDe, which represents his house and techno-oriented work as a DJ and producer, “While creating tracks, I became inspired by how the technology could code and decode the audio signal” he explains. “This technology represents the future, and for me, Audio KoDe represents a sound and style that is always on-point, now and into the future.” With a slate of new Audio KoDe tunes ready to be dropped on upcoming tours of Asia and South America, the return to his summer residency in Greece and the impending launch of his own Sick Music label arriving later this year, this multi-talented ball of energy shows no signs of slowing down. If anything, Ody is just getting started.
