Born to a music-loving mother in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., Astra Pentaxia was raised on New Order, Liz Phair and The Dandy Warhols. At the age of 13, Astra was given a guitar for Christmas and immediately began to compose her own songs. Working at a record store in high school enriched her taste for electronic music, but it was not until she moved to San Francisco in 2008 that she began to explore ways to make her music less traditionally acoustic and more digital. Her acquisition of a Yamaha CP 25 and a Roland TR-8 plus the encouragement from musician friends to use Ableton allowed her to produce the reverb-drenched 2017 EP, 'Confessions from the Rainbow Manor.' Shortly after creating this record, Astra migrated her entire life (including her collection of analog cameras and life's work of archived negatives) to Paris, but settled in Berlin in 2018. The move to Berlin left Astra with little desire to play guitar but underlined her love of darkwave. For two years, she played synth in the minimalist krautrock band backward futures, but 2022 saw her return to her solo work. In 2023, she formed Prism Obsidian with a Black Quantam Afrofuturist visual artist and researcher in postcolonial theology, and debuted their sound art piece on the 161st episode of radioart106 in October. In 2025, a song she co-wrote and sang was released on Almeeva's album 'HyperLife' and she is set to release her first official single as a solo artist in seven years, the menacingly plaintive 'Sonic Telepath' on August 22, 2025.
