Alex Wilcox is an American music producer and DJ based in Berlin. He composes eclectic club music and DJ’s only his own productions in a genre-less chaotic whirlwind involving hard cuts, numerous BPM changes and existential theatrical moments. Born in Texas, Alex Wilcox was originally infatuated with 90's rock music and spent countless days copying John Frusciante's guitar playing. In his teenage years he played in a hard rock/funk band throughout venues in Dallas. When he was 15 he played at the Texas State Fair - filled with purpose, he left knowing that he would pursue music for the rest of his life. During college in Austin, he visited Berlin, where his nascent interest in techno took a leap forward - he was particularly interested in its relationship to funk music and it’s functional honesty. “I loved how the tracks were made for this group of people in a club - you want to dance? Here’s some bangers - the concept is straightforward and I love that.” Later, in Austin, he began learning more about electronic music production - originally wanting to make instrumentals to surround his guitar playing. He realized that Austin's electronic scene was too small and not what he was looking for - impressed with the music industry of LA, he moved there. Once there, he continued honing his production skills - at this point constantly listening to Modeselektor, Paul Kalkbrenner, and Kanye West. In LA, he worked in the major Hollywood Studio - Chalice Recordings - where he was able to see the inner workings of pop/rap music production in the modern era. He also began assisting Platinum-selling pop-producer Pinkslip - primarily editing and tuning vocals. After spending several weeks in Berlin, Alex realized that while he enjoyed certain elements of pop-music and the LA underground scene, he longed for the sense of community, value system, and perspective on music that he saw in clubs and Berlin. He first moved to Detroit where he began DJ'ing on a more regular basis. He spent time working in UR Headquarters Submerge - getting advice from Mike Banks on production, and continued to constantly create music. He self-released an multi-genre album “Because the Sky is Blue.” Anetha ended up buying one of the tracks “Sleep Paralysis” from said album. This put them in contact, eventually leading to Anetha asking Alex for tracks for her label Mama Told Ya. The EP - titled "It's Okay to Cry," featured eccentric, "oddball" techno that plays with unconventional ideas in the club world. Shortly after its release, interest in Alex’s productions grew - he soon caught the attention of Nina Kraviz. This led to his recent 6-track EP on Nina’s label Trip Recordings. Surgical, smart, whacky, and with a sense-of-humor, the EP has pushed Alex further into the techno consciousness - being played by countless headlining DJ’s at nearly every major venue. One of those DJ’s, Ellen Allien, invited Alex to make his Berlin debut at her infamous party “We Are Not Alone.” Alex has also played Pal (Hamburg), Nexus (Paris), La Belle Électrique (Grenoble), The Porn Shop (Detroit), and many other spots. Expect several projects to surface in 2023 as Alex releases more ambitious musical projects and expands his universe of unique, progressive, bombastic, catchy, and surreal club music.
