Very much a part of the current Latin-American born and influenced wave of DJs and producers breaking through and dominating the underground airwaves – from Nick Leon to INVT and Bitter Babe to Siu Mata – Porto-via-Belo Horizonte DJ and Yellow Islands Records (releases from Kessler, Boulderhead) label head ALBIN is highlighting Brazilian community through his blend of Baile Funk, Miami-Bass, forward-thinking Techno and underground UK Dubstep, Breaks & Jungle; channeling the spirits of both South America and the UK and finding a sweet spot between the bounce, bass and energy of each continent's aesthetics. Previously supported by Ransom Note, NYC collective HAUS of ALTR, Craigie Knowes, Rinse FM, Mixmag and Groove Magazin, ALBIN held down a residency at Balamii Radio under his Yellow Island Records label between 2020 and 2022, inviting more than sixty guests from around the globe to connect with the deep-yet-dutty Yellow Island aesthetic, sharing the decks with Amelia Holt, Zopelar, John Beltran, Andrea (Ilian Tape), Glenn Astro, label-resident Etari and more, in addition to a residency at Internet Public Radio where he invited Soela, Paul P (Of Paradise), BADSISTA and more for guest slots. Community is very much at the forefront of what ALBIN does. Beginning going to psychedelic trance and house & techno parties at the age of fourteen in his Brazilian home of Belo Horizonte and began making decorations and helping the load-in at the local parties. In 2015 he began participating with various collectives in the streets, occupying urban spaces, reframing their use, and promoting inclusive spaces and events. “I traveled and lived through some cities in Brazil and actively participated with the collectives Masterplano (Belo Horizonte), 101Ø (Belo Horizonte), Arruaça (Porto Alegre) and Goma Rec. (Porto Alegre) between 2015 and 2018”, he says. “Parties and collectives whose main objective was to create inclusive spaces for the lgbtqia+ community; people with low income and with little access to electronic music. There we played House, Techno, Electro and variations, transforming that space into a political act, most of the time on the street, as an urban occupation and also in abandoned warehouses.” Moving to Rio de Janeiro in 2019, ALBIN began focusing more attention to the label, which would in-turn begin to become a home to the melting pot of club sounds that the emerging-yet-experienced DJ pulls from, but it was São Paulo (where the DJ and label owner lived between 2020 and 2022) where it truly was given the space to flourish. “It is [São Paulo] the most influential city in Latin America, the most multicultural in Brazil, a globalised space where new things gain importance, a place where you can try and always have people interested in discovering something new.” Now residing in Porto, ALBIN is ready to showcase his transatlantic blends and deep, bass-exploring rhythms to a European audience. “With all these influences that I have been across, I can say that my sound compares to something deep, dirty, and marginalised; an experimental sound that escapes a classist aesthetic, where I have the freedom to express myself artistically.” “At the age of 19/20, I started playing Techno, Electro, House, UKG and DnB, because I was in love with the night scene of clubs and since then I have been mixing different styles and not limiting myself to play only one genre, which I think makes me versatile, by making presentations with different proposals that can navigate from ambient to the most agitated and weird, experimental contemporary music." Floating somewhere between a hybrid Latin-sound, Ilian Tape-techno and deep UK club, ALBIN is a DJ ready to tell his story through the sounds of his home and outer-space, turning in recent mixes for HÖR, Index Records and Berlin-based Bubble Bath, and playing across Europe and South America in,Portugal, Nederlands, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, Argentina and Brazil.
