Young curiosity was piqued when middlenight “Autobahn” and “I Feel Love” transmissions from Chicago began crackling on a northern Minnesota bedside clock radio. Interest in these sounds from the astral plane deepened when an alien band armed with Moogs and Arps landed on SNL and delivered “Are Friends Electric.” A career in visual art was cut short by summonings from the early ‘80s downtown Minneapolis scene developing at First Avenue where Prince was cutting his chops and the seeds of alternative music were being sown in the Queer/Punk/Funk culture that was all happening under the same roof. A 30-plus year career in record production ensued. The playing field expanded to Chicago where the new House and Industrial forms were coming to life and the frequent studio commutes were picking up college radio transmissions from the nascent rumblings of Electro and Techno taking flight just up the road in Detroit. Time passed. Records were produced for artists Wilco, Slint, US Maple and Beck. Old ways of working and revenue streams withered and burnout ensued. A day job in audio archives started and the endless marathon of oral history and Folk music preservation rekindled old left turn Punk Rock tendencies and a desire to revisit the sounds of those original middlenight transmissions. Years of sound design and underground club artist research became an obsessive quest for new forms and a love for music was reborn. A fresh approach augmented by the touchstones from 30-plus years of work in the field is where we have landed with a desire to put community, movement and catharsis first and foremost along with a disposal of ego, dreams for a better tomorrow, and if time allows, a peaceful night’s sleep.
